Admission Requirements

Selection to the PhD program is based on past academic performance, and performance in the admission test and ​interview.

  1. The first step in the process of admission to the doctoral programme involves shortlisting potential candidates based on their application details. The next steps will comprise a written test and an interview, which will be conducted at the department. Shortlisted applicants will be judged on the basis of their knowledge of economics at the post-graduate (Master’s) level, and on their ability to identify and execute potential research topics. Candidates who are selected, and subsequently join the programme, will be required to satisfactorily complete one year of compulsory coursework, with the option of taking elective courses that are on offer thereafter. The areas of expertise of faculty members in the economics department include Macroeconomics, Microeconomic Theory, Applied Econometrics, Environmental Economics, International Trade, Mathematical Economics, Development Economics, Labour Economics, Health Economics, Economic Growth, Public Economics, Game Theory, Network Theory and Industrial Organization. The candidates admitted into the program are provided very generous assistantships for four years.
  2. Applications for admission are to be made online. The online application form can be found on the university webpage. The last day for applying to the program is July 4, 2021. The application fee is INR 1200. Admit Card for the written examination will be sent out to the candidates by email.
  3. Ph.D. Candidates must submit three reference letters and a statement of purpose in support of their application. Reference letters in sealed envelopes can be sent by post along with the application or can be directly sent by referees to
  4. Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview to be held online. The written test will be held on 11 July 2021.


The minimum qualification for admission to the Ph.D. programme is a Masters degree with 55% marks (in any discipline).

The eligibility criteria mentioned above are minimum standards and applications not meeting the same will be summarily rejected. Short-listed candidates will be required to demonstrate their knowledge through an on-site written test and an interview. Selections will be based on past academic performance, written examination and interview. Please note that not all candidate meeting the minimum eligibility criteria may be shortlisted.

    • All Mark sheets/Degree Certificates (10th Standard onwards)
    • Standardized Examination certificate- CSIR, UGC, GATE etc. (only if applicable)
    • Statement of Purpose
  • After online submission, print the completed form and send by speed post to the University at the address given below with following documents (Please add delete documents as per requirement.)
    • Completed form
    • Three reference letters in support of application
    • Demand Draft for application fee (If online fee payment mode is not used)
